Essential January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Individuals

As the new year unfolds, January 2026 brings critical individual tax deadlines regarding estimated payments, tip reporting, and comprehensive tax planning. Stay informed on these essential due dates to effectively manage your tax obligations.

January 2 - Schedule Your Tax Appointment Early

Tax season officially kicks off in January. To avoid the last-minute rush, it is advisable to secure an appointment with your tax preparer soon. Our team at Martinez & Shanken PLLC in Gilbert, AZ, specializes in small business accounting and tax preparations—schedule your consultation today before our calendar fills up.

January 12 - Tip Reporting Deadline

Employees who earn tips must report any received tips exceeding $20 in December to their employer by January 12. Submission can be via IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement including your signature, name, address, and Social Security number; your employer’s name and address; and the total tips received. Employers must withhold FICA and income taxes from these tips, and any uncollected withholdings will appear in box 8 of your year-end W-2, requiring you to settle them when filing your tax return.

January 15 - Final Quarter Estimated Tax Payment Due

This date marks the deadline for the fourth quarter estimated tax installment for the 2025 tax year. Missing this deadline requires you to file your 2025 tax return and pay due taxes by February 2, 2026, to avoid penalties for underpayment.

Weekend & Holiday Considerations

If a tax filing due date coincides with a weekend or legal holiday, it automatically extends to the next business day.
