Key Tax Deadlines for October 2025

As October ushers in cooler days, it also brings significant tax deadlines that individuals need to note. For those who filed a 6-month extension on their 2024 taxes, the deadline is October 15. On this date, both the completed 2024 Form 1040 and any outstanding payment are due. Don’t let this critical date pass by unnoticed.

October 10 - Reporting Tips

Employees earning tips must report any amounts over $20 received in September to their employers by October 10 using IRS Form 4070. Employers, in turn, collect FICA taxes and income tax on these tips from the employee’s regular wages. Should these wages be insufficient for covering tax withholdings, the shortfall will be recorded in box 8 of the W-2 form, meaning payment of the remaining withholding will be required when annual tax returns are filed.Image 2

October 15 - Deadline for Foreign Financial Interests

Individuals with foreign financial accounts who received an automatic extension have until October 15 to submit Form FinCEN 114 to the Department of the Treasury. Missing this deadline could result in penalties.

October 15 - Final Deadline for Individuals

Those who took advantage of the 6-month filing extension for their 2024 income taxes must file Form 1040 and settle any dues by October 15. Failing to do so may lead to added interest and penalties.

Weekends & Holidays

If a tax deadline falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the due date is postponed to the next business day not recognized as a holiday. This ensures taxpayers are afforded the maximum allowance to meet their tax obligations without disruption.Image 1

Extensions for Disaster Areas

Those residing in designated disaster areas may receive extended deadlines for their tax returns. It is advised to check the FEMA website and the IRS page for updates regarding disaster declarations and their impact on filing extensions.
