March 2026 Tax Calendar: Tip Reporting and Final Prep Deadlines

With April 15 looming on the horizon, March serves as the final stretch for getting your financial house in order. For us here at Martinez & Shanken PLLC in Gilbert, this is the busiest time of year—essentially the Super Bowl for your books. While the major filing deadline is next month, March holds a few critical dates that individuals, specifically service industry professionals and procrastinators, need to watch closely.

Here is your guide to the individual tax due dates and recommended timelines for March 2026.

March 10: Reporting Tip Income

For our clients working in the service industry—or business owners employing staff who receive gratuities—accurate reporting is non-negotiable. If you are an employee who received more than $20 in tips during February, you must report that income to your employer by March 10.

Accountant reviewing documents

You are required to use IRS Form 4070 (Employee's Daily Record of Tips and Report to Employer) or a formal written statement to submit this information. A valid statement must include:

  • Your signature
  • Your name, address, and Social Security number
  • Your employer’s name and address (or the establishment’s name)
  • The specific month or period covered by the report
  • The total amount of tips received

Why This Matters for Withholding

Once reported, your employer uses this data to withhold FICA taxes and income tax from your regular wages. If your base wages are too low to cover the required tax withholding for your tips, your employer will report the uncollected amount in box 8 of your W-2 at the end of the year. This often results in a surprise tax bill when you file your return, as you will be responsible for paying that uncollected withholding out of pocket.

March 16: The "Soft Deadline" for Tax Appointments

While the IRS sets the official deadlines, the calendar reality dictates our schedule. We are now roughly one month away from the individual income tax filing deadline. If you have not yet secured a slot on our calendar to have your taxes prepared, we strongly advise you to contact us by March 16.

We understand that gathering documents can be stressful, but please do not wait until you have every single receipt organized. If you are missing specific forms (like a delayed K-1 or a corrected 1099), bring what you have. We can review your current status, create a checklist of missing items, and get the bulk of the work done. When the final pieces arrive, you can simply forward them to us.

A Note on Extensions

There is often a stigma associated with filing an extension, but there shouldn't be. An extension to file is not an extension to pay. Even if you suspect you will need more time to finalize your return, it is financially strategic to prepare a preliminary return now. This allows us to estimate your liability so you can pay the tax due by April 15, minimizing costly interest and penalties. We can then file the extension for you, giving us time to perfect the return without the pressure of the deadline.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

General Timing Rules

Weekends & Holidays

Per standard IRS regulations, if a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline is automatically pushed to the next business day.

Disaster Area Relief

If you live or operate a business in a federally designated disaster area, typical due dates may be postponed. Given the unpredictability of recent weather events, it is worth verifying if your region qualifies for relief. You can check the current status of disaster declarations at the following resources:
